At the Humane Society of Carroll County, kindness isn’t just a once-a-year idea—it’s what drives everything we do. From caring for over 4,500 animals each year to helping families keep their pets during difficult times, your support makes it all possible.
Humane Society of Carroll County Be Kind to Animals Month Recognition Program
Humane Society of Carroll County recognizes the members of our community whose dedication keeps animals safe, cared for, and loved. These are the individuals and organizations who champion kindness, nurture the next generation, provide homes and care for animals in need, extend lifesaving opportunities, and inspire others to act with compassion.
Through this recognition program, we celebrate the many ways our community comes together to protect, advocate for, and uplift animals, shining a light on the extraordinary spirit that makes Carroll County a place where compassion thrives. Submit nominations through June 1, 2026.
Nominations are now being accepted for the following awards:
MaKenzi Rae Humane‑i‑Tarian Award
The MaKenzi Rae Humane‑i‑Tarian Award is presented in memory of MaKenzi Rae Cash, a compassionate young soul whose love for animals and dedication to kindness continue to inspire our community. MaKenzi cherished the animals in her life and stood for empathy and care in all she did.
This award is open to a current student in Carroll County who exemplifies extraordinary kindness and service toward animals and people alike — someone whose actions reflect empathy, advocacy, and generosity of spirit. Recipients of the MaKenzi Rae Humane‑i‑Tarian Award give of themselves to uplift animals and strengthen the bonds between humans and animals in Carroll County, carrying forward the legacy of compassion that MaKenzi lived by.
HSCC Founder’s Award
The Humane Society of Carroll County was established in 1945 by a group of concerned citizens dedicated to improving the lives of animals in our community. Since that time, HSCC has grown into a trusted advocate for the compassionate treatment of animals through sheltering, adoption, population control, education, and protection.
The HSCC Founder’s Award honors an individual who embodies the spirit of those early pioneers — someone who champions animal welfare in Carroll County through meaningful action, unwavering support, and advocacy. This person may contribute through philanthropy, serve as a public defender of HSCC’s mission, offer guidance and leadership, or engage in initiatives that advance the care and well-being of animals in the community.
This award recognizes a person whose dedication and vision have strengthened HSCC’s lifesaving mission, continuing the legacy of the founders nearly eight decades ago.
Iris Katz Memorial Humane Education Award
Iris Katz was a dedicated board member and advocate for the Humane Society of Carroll County whose lifelong commitment to humane education in schools reflected her belief in teaching students to “be kind to animals.” Her passion for compassion, responsibility, and respect for animals continues to shape humane education efforts today. Her work lives on through educators, students, and community members who carry forward these values.
The Humane Society of Carroll County believes in fostering compassion and responsibility for animals through education. We partner with schools, student organizations, and youth groups throughout the year to help the next generation learn the importance of caring for animals and promoting responsible pet ownership.
This award is open to a Carroll County teacher or educational professional who inspires students to demonstrate compassion, respect, and kindness toward animals, helping to shape a more humane and responsible community. Together with her friends and family, we honor Iris’s commitment and enduring legacy, which continues to guide humane education efforts across Carroll County, Maryland.
Humane in Action Exemplary Business Award
The Humane Society of Carroll County relies on the generosity of the community to raise over $1 million each year to support our lifesaving mission. This award honors businesses, organizations, or teams in Carroll County that contribute to this mission through their time, talent, and treasure.
Nominate a business or organization that demonstrates extraordinary commitment to helping HSCC save lives, enrich human lives, and strengthen our community through advocacy, resources, or volunteer support.
Helping Heroes Public Service Award
Acts of courage, compassion, and quick thinking can make all the difference in the life of an animal. The Humane Society of Carroll County (HSCC) is proud to recognize individuals and teams in Carroll County whose actions have protected or saved the life of an animal.
This award honors a member of the public, veterinary professional or veterinary team, first responder, or organization in Carroll County that has demonstrated heroic measures, exceptional stewardship, or lifesaving intervention on behalf of an animal or animals.
Nominees must have performed their heroic or compassionate actions within Carroll County.
Marietta Barnes Memorial Pet Advocate Award
Marietta Barnes was a devoted advocate for animals and a passionate supporter of the Humane Society of Carroll County. Her generosity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to animal welfare left a lasting impact on the organization and the community it serves. Through her support, Marietta helped ensure that countless animals received the care, protection, and second chances they deserved.
In her honor, the Humane Society of Carroll County recognizes individuals who make a lasting difference in the lives of animals throughout the Carroll County community.
This award is intended for someone who goes beyond everyday support—an individual who actively advocates for animals through community involvement, education, outreach, philanthropy, or hands-on efforts within Carroll County. Ideal nominees may promote responsible pet ownership, advocate for animal welfare through education, outreach, or philanthropy, support animals and pet owners beyond the shelter environment, and demonstrate a long-term commitment to improving the lives of animals in Carroll County.
Recipients of the Marietta Barnes Memorial Pet Advocate Award embody Marietta’s legacy of compassion, leadership, and dedication, helping to create a more humane and responsible Carroll County community.
HSCC Foster Hero Award
The HSCC Foster Hero Award celebrates the extraordinary dedication of individuals who open their hearts and homes to animals in need. Fosters play a critical role in the Humane Society of Carroll County’s mission, providing temporary care, love, and guidance to pets while preparing them for their forever homes.
This award honors an HSCC foster who goes above and beyond — someone who demonstrates compassion, patience, and creativity in nurturing animals, ensuring they receive the care, socialization, and training necessary to thrive. Whether rescuing a shy kitten, helping a senior dog feel safe, or supporting animals with special needs, these foster heroes make a lasting impact on the lives of countless animals and the families who adopt them.
Recipients of the HSCC Foster Hero Award exemplify selflessness, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of animals, serving as true ambassadors of kindness in Carroll County.
Be Kind to Animals Volunteer* Award
The Be Kind to Animals Volunteer Award recognizes an individual whose dedication, compassion, and generosity make a lasting difference for the animals and people of Carroll County. Volunteers are the heart of the Humane Society of Carroll County, giving their time, energy, and care to support our lifesaving mission in countless ways.
This award honors a volunteer for HSCC who goes above and beyond — someone who consistently demonstrates commitment, reliability, and a positive spirit, whether through direct animal care, community outreach, events, or behind-the-scenes support. Their efforts improve the lives of shelter pets and strengthen the HSCC community, inspiring others to act with kindness.
Recipients of the Be Kind to Animals Volunteer Award embody the true spirit of service, showing unwavering compassion, dedication, and a commitment to making Carroll County a better place for animals and the people who love them.
**Recipients must be a volunteer for HSCC to be eligible.
Rescue Partner Award
The HSCC Rescue Partner Award honors a rescue organization serving Carroll County that demonstrates extraordinary dedication to saving and improving the lives of animals. Rescue partners are essential allies in the Humane Society of Carroll County’s mission, working tirelessly to provide care, rehabilitation, and second chances to animals in need.
This award recognizes a rescue that goes above and beyond — whether by taking in animals from challenging situations, supporting medical or behavioral rehabilitation, or finding safe, loving homes for pets. Their commitment, collaboration, and compassion help ensure that every animal has the opportunity for a better life.
Recipients of the HSCC Rescue Partner Award exemplify leadership, teamwork, and unwavering dedication to animal welfare, serving as a vital part of Carroll County’s animal-loving community. Rescue organizations need not be physically located in Carroll County to qualify, provided they serve Carroll County residents or animals.

Call for Entries
Be Kind to Animals Student Design Contest
The Humane Society of Carroll County is launching a design contest for local students and community members to get creative while helping spread the message of kindness to animals.
Winning designs will be available for purchase online, and a select number will also be sold at Woofstock on September 19, 2026. While T-shirt designs are the primary focus, some artwork may also be featured on notecards, magnets, stickers, and other promotional items.

- Ages 8 & Under

Recognition
Winning designs will be recognized at Woofstock on September 19, 2026. This is a fun and meaningful opportunity for students and community members to use their creativity to support animals in need.
Student Design Contest Guidelines Contest Details
Contest Details
- Each participant may submit up to six (6) entries.
- Designs must measure 9.5″ × 10″.
- Entries must include:
- Parent/guardian contact information and permission for the Humane Society of Carroll County to reproduce, display, and use submitted artwork for promotional and fundraising purposes
- Teacher contact information (if applicable)
Submission Deadline
All entries must be received by July 31, 2026. The number of finalists and winners will depend on the total number of entries received. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges including staff, volunteers, and supporters of the Humane Society of Carroll County.
