Microchipping Saves Lives
A microchip is a small device, about the size of a grain of rice, that is placed under your pet’s skin. It provides a permanent form of identification that cannot be lost, removed, or worn out like a collar or tag. When a lost pet is brought to a shelter or veterinary clinic, staff can scan for a microchip and quickly contact the owner. Microchipping is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure your pet finds their way home if they ever become lost.
Why Microchipping Matters
-
Permanent identification A microchip stays with your pet for life.
-
Increases return-to-owner rates Pets with microchips are reunited with their families far more often than those without.
-
Peace of mind Even if a collar or tag falls off, your pet still has a way home.

Visit Your Local Veterinary Office
There are many options to getting your pet microchipped! In addition to our clinic events, your local veterinary office can chip your pet. Don’t forget to register your chip and update it when you move or your contact information changes.
Need to check a Lost Pet for a Microchip?
If safe, bring the animal to the shelter so staff can scan for microchips or check for tags. If you visit a veterinary office, please ask if they have a universal chip scanner. Not all scanners will read all chips.
Identification Tags: A Helpful Extra
Important: An ID tag should never replace a microchip, but it can help reunite you with your pet faster.
In addition to a microchip, every pet should wear a collar with an ID tag that lists your current phone number. ID tags provide immediate, visible contact information for anyone who finds your pet.
Tags can be purchased at most local pet supply stores or ordered online. Having both a microchip and an ID tag gives your pet the best chance of a quick and safe return home.
